Turf and recreation - Turf and Recreation 16 SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 1994 A short 45-minute drive southwest of Woodleigh is the village of Cape Egmont where one will find three unique buildings constructed from more than 25,000 bottles of varied sixes and colors, creating a delightful reflection of natural light throughout the buildings. These magnificent bottle houses were a retirement project of the late Edouard Arsenault. At the age of 65, when most of us would be happy to take it easy and enjoy a well-deserved retirement, armed with shovel, wheelbarrow and pickup truck, Edouard was just getting started on his project. When he died in 1984, he had not quite completed his last building, a glass chapel. The property is now managed by his very capable daughter, Rejeanne, who hasn't ceased to improve on the original layout. A few years ago, she retained the services of Morello Landscape Architects, who drew up a detailed landscaping plan for the site. Every year, with the assistance of a local landscaper, Roger Bernard, we implement more phases of the landscaping plan explains Rejeanne. Since the property is relatively close to the Northumberland Strait, a body of water separating Prince Edward Island from New Brunswick, it is protected from strong winds by several earth mounds on the southwest side. The site features a picturesque pond with fountain surrounded by more than 50 varieties of perennial and annual bowers for summer-long color. Woodleigh's Replica and the Glass Bottle Houses are but two of the many treasures found in a very special place that I affectionately call The Island. Adrien Gallant, pay., is an agronomist with Nutrite loc. in Elmira, Ont.
